Finca Figuera Macabeo Chardonnay 2007

Beside its grapes, both for eating and for wine, the Valencia region is famous for its oranges.

It's also the 'rice capital' of Spain, with the largest paddyfields in the world outside southeast Asia.

Appropriately it is here that paella was said to have been invented. Since investment into modern technology and the building of a handful of very high-tech wineries, some excellent value, attractive wines have been made, with a growing number of handcrafted examples with real character and charm from small estates. Founded nearly a century ago, Finca Figuera is one such cellar.

It lies 100km south of the port of Valencia in the town of Fuente de la Higuera (meaning 'fountain of the fig tree').

Its wines are often mentioned in the highly respected wine publication Guida Pe?in. Victor Porter is the talented winemaker at this Valencia cellar.

A young Chilean, he has worked at prestigious estates both in his homeland and Spain and brings a distinctly modern touch to this more traditional area. He has used the native white grape of the region - Macabeo with its crisp lemony, stony flavours - and added just a dash of Chardonnay to lend a little extra roundness and peach character to the wine.

The vines are all grown at a reasonable altitude - between 350 and 650 metres - so cold nights slow down the ripening process and help produce fresh, aromatic whites.
